THE PROBLEM

Attention difficulties compromise a child’s education, social skills, relationships, mental health, and employment opportunities. The impact on families’ physical and emotional well-being is immeasurable.

Childhood attention deficits remain a significant and growing concern within Australia and worldwide. Without treatment, they can have devastating and long-term impacts on the developing brain.

Children with neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder are at heightened risk of experiencing attention deficits and their associated negative impacts.

Currently, treatment options are sparse, with the most common being psychostimulant medication such as Ritalin. These drug based interventions often focus on improving symptoms rather than treating underlying causes of attention problems. Current non-pharmaceutical interventions often require multiple clinical appointments across many locations which are expensive and time consuming, meaning that many children miss out on life-changing therapies.

Selection

Focus

Often when we talk about attention we refer to attention span or the ability to maintain focus on a task over a prolonged period. This ability to focus on a task requires children to stay alert, even when the information that is being presented isn’t particularly exciting or stimulating.  Being able to focus is crucial for learning new skills, for absorbing information in the classroom, and for listening to instructions. This skill is called Sustained attention and the TALI Focus exercise trains the child’s ability to maintain concentration on a task over a period of time.

Control

Children’s ability to control what they attend to and what they ignore is crucial.  If children aren’t highly selective then they would be overwhelmed with information and struggle to prioritize what should be remembered. If everything a child observed, felt or heard was equally recorded then their brain would be extremely muddled. The ability to differentiate between important and unimportant information is an aspect of attentional control. The TALI Control exercise trains a child’s ability to focus and respond to certain information, whilst ignoring conflicting information.

Inhibition

Being able to appropriately control thoughts and behaviours is an important skill for children to develop.  Inhibitory control involves the ability to override strong but inappropriate tendencies, it prevents fidgeting in the classroom, talking over the top of others, regulating the volume of speech and avoiding risky or potentially dangerous behaviour. For instance, refraining from talking to strangers or responding to every command in a game of “Simon Says”.  The TALI Inhibition exercise trains children’s ability to resist distractions, give a more considered response, and avoid one’s first reaction.
